Le’Veon Bell, one of the top running backs in the NFL, faces a four game suspension because he missed a drug test.
According to ESPN, Bell isn’t being suspended because he actually failed a test, but the violation stems from him not showing up to a scheduled drug test. This isn’t the first drug related issue that Bell has had. In 2015, he missed the first two games of the regular season after being arrested for possession of marijuana.
When on the field, Bell is one of the most productive running backs in the league. His ability to not only run, but also catch the ball out of the backfield, makes him a real threat for any defense. In 2014, which was his last full season, he rushed for 1,361 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 83 passes and three scores. Last year, despite just playing in 6 games because of suspension and injuries, he rushed for 556 yards for three touchdowns and also had 24 catches.
The loss of Bell could be significant for the Steelers, but it helps that they have DeAngelo Williams backing him up. Williams played a huge role for Pittsburgh last season in Bell’s absence, rushing for 907 yards and scoring 11 times. He also caught 40 passes.
The Steelers are the favorites to win the AFC North this year, and also one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Bell is reportedly in the process of appealing the suspension. The hearing should take place before the season starts so he could still see the field if the ruling is overturned.
